Step 1
Select an advent calendar that is re-usable if you're committed to environmental causes. This type of calendar has pockets with the numbers one through 24 on it. You place an item in a pocket for the owner of the calendar to pull out on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd...of December. Often, the 24th is the largest pocket.

Step 2
Choose an advent calendar with chocolate for the chocaholic in your family. These calendars are often easily available at your local grocery store. They are about 2-inches thick and have a cardboard covering that you peel off of the day you're opening to access the chocolate.

Step 3
Buy an advent calendar that reveals a picture for the artist or the curious. As you peel off the cover for each day in the month of December, another section of the picture is revealed. You can involve the whole family in the unveiling for some family fun.

Step 4
Remember those less fortunate. An advent calendar with pockets can also be filled with opportunities to share with those who have a little less. Write a card for each pocket that has a quick, five minute project for sharing. It can be as simple as, "Sort the old shoes for give away" to the more complex, "Organize a trip to the food pantry to help sort." This is another wonderful way to share the spirit of the season.
