Most people are familiar with the rules of No Limit Texas Hold'em. But many are perplexed by the limit version of the game. Learn the basics of Limit Texas Hold'em.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide what the betting limits of your game will be. For beginners it might be wise to start with $.25-$.50 limits. For more advanced players (or players with bigger expendable incomes), you can set the limits at $2-$4 or $3-$6. For the sake of these instructions, we'll assume you're playing $3-$6, a common limit found at casinos.

  2. Step 2

Have players post their blinds. The blinds should be $1 for the small blind and $3 for the big blind.

  3. Step 3

Deal two cards to each player.

  4. Step 4

Starting with the player to the left of the big blind, place your bet. All bets in this round must be in increments of $3, no more and no less. There's a cap of four bets, meaning the max bet per player should be $12.

  5. Step 5

Lay down the flop. The player to the left of the dealer begins betting. Once again bets in this round should be in increments of $3.

  6. Step 6

Lay down the turn card. Bets in this round now double to $6 increments. The cap remains, so the most any one player should bet in this round is $24.

  7. Step 7

Lay down the river card. Once again bets in this round are in increments of $6.

  8. Step 8

Once all betting is over, turn over your cards. The player with the best hand wins the pot, and the button and the blinds move to the left.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're new to limit poker, try playing for free online to get the hang of it.
  • Read a book to better understand the strategy behind the game. Doyle Brunson's Super System has a great chapter on limit poker.
  • The four-bet cap doesn't apply if the game is heads up (one on one). When this occurs, the two players can raise as many times as they want.
  • Poker is gambling, so be prepared to lose money.
