How to Eat Bratwurst

Bratwurst is a specialty of Wisconsin, a spicy and flavorful sausage that is usually accompanied by a bottle of beer. The key to great 'brats' is cooking and simmering the seasoned sausages in beer; you're left with a juicy and tasty brat that can be served in a bun just like a regular hot dog. Still, you'll need to dress it up just right! Here's how to eat bratwurst just like a native Wisconsinite.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Authentic bratwurst, cooked to perfection
  • Hot Dog/Hoagie buns
  • Butter
  • Dill pickle
  • Sauerkraut
  • Spicy mustard
  • Sauteed onions
  • Ketchup

Step1
Cook or grill the bratwurst. You can cook the bratwurst in a pan until brown, and cook up some onions and sauerkraut along with the sausages. Alternatively, grill the sausages on a BBQ and prepare the onions separately.
Step2
Butter the hot dog buns. Hoagie buns work well for larger brats, and you can lightly toast each one then spread it with butter.
Step3
Place a brat inside the bun. Carefully place a cooked brat into each bun, ready for serving.
Step4
Add the toppings. Place a heaping spoonful of sauteed onions and sauerkraut onto each brat.
Step5
Add the condiments. Add a spoonful each of ketchup, mustard and dill pickle.
Step6
Eat the bratwurst. Enjoy your brat with a pint of beer or other cold beverage!

Tips & Warnings

  • Bratwurst is traditionally eaten outdoors; you'll find it at most tailgating parties, outdoor events, and special occasions that involve a grill.
  • You don't need a knife, fork, or even napkins to eat a bratwurst the traditional way!
  • Enjoy a 'bratwash' in the summer with brats and a cold pint of Wisconsin beer.
  • Bratwurst is served regularly in Germany.
  • Brats are rarely enjoyed with white wine or a fancy cocktail.
  • Bratwurst is not a low-calorie food.
  • Cheese is rarely served with bratwurst, and does not have a place in the classic recipe.

on 12/4/2007 Nice article about "brats". My dad loved to cook them from the time we lived in Wisconsin many years ago. You can also get them in German restaurants; I had one once at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg VA.
