The ultimate goal of any web editor is to facilitate the creation of a website with ease. After this is done, the site must be uploaded to a web host. Regular updating of the site may also be necessary. To do all this, an FTP must be set up to transfer data from server to client as well as client to server. Dreamweaver incorporates an FTP server access into its program. Once this is set up, modifying a site should be simple.

From Quick Guide: FTP Server Basics
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find out the following information from the web host: FTP host name, Path for the web directory, FTP login and FTP password.

  2. Step 2

Remember to use very unique passwords. If possible, use upper and lower case letters and punctuation.

  3. Step 3

Select Site and then Manager Sites. Choose the site where FTP is being set and select Edit.

  4. Step 4

Click on the Advanced tab and select Remote Info category. In the dropdown menu that appears in the center of the page, select FTP. Select OK.

  5. Step 5

Enter FTP host name, host directory, login and password.

  6. Step 6

Make sure Use Passive FTP and Use Firewall are unchecked. A network system administrative will have to give further instructions if these items are required. In most cases, it will not be necessary.

  7. Step 7

Use a separate FTP program if desired. This option is desired to make the process user friendly for users less savvy with FTP protocols. If FTP programs are desired and present no difficulties, make sure the program is compatible with operating system. Cute FTP works well with Windows. Fetch and Transmit are FTP applications that are compatible with Macs.
