Your twins begin together in the womb, and stay together throughout their infancy. Then along comes school, and they find that they are going to be in separate classes. The shock to the system can be severe if you are not prepared. As a parent, what are you to do? Here is how you prepare them for this brand new experience.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
The first thing you can do to prepare your twins for separate classes at school is to begin to integrate the idea long before they start. One way to do this is to take them on trips to the store alone. Let mommy stay with one twin, while Daddy takes the other twin to get the groceries.
Step2
The next thing you can do is to encourage independence wherever possible. Have them work on chores separate from one another. Little steps can make a big difference in the long run.
Step3
Be sure to talk it over with them, and explain that they are going to be learning in different classes. Make sure that they are aware of exactly what that means, and do not make a huge deal of it when you explain. They will pick up on the anxiety in your voice if you are not careful. Explain it as though it was a trip to the park.
Step4
Concentrate on how exciting it will be for the twins to learn in two places! Remind them that they can then come home and share with you and each other what they learned in their respective classes. Each class is special after all!
Step5
Make sure that the twins understand that they are not alone. Remind them that Mommy and Daddy are just a phone call away if they need them, and that their teacher is their friend. School is going to be a great adventure!

Tips & Warnings

  • Allow your twins their own rooms whenever possible. It will foster independence.
  • Enroll your twins in preschool and try to get the classes apart. The earlier the better when it comes to helping them adapt.
  • Be sure to encourage your twins to share their days at school with each other. Often, it will create a snowball effect and they will learn double the amount of information!
