How to Set Up a Manual Sawmill

Manual sawmills are one of the cheapest ways to purchase a mill. Because they have no hydraulics or fancy electronic gadgets, these mills are the workhorses of the sawmill industry. Without the extras though, using a manual mill is very hard work and not for the man (or woman) who is out of shape. Manual Sawmills usually come in sections. It will include the rails and the carriage, which houses the motor and the blade assembly. These are easy to put together, once you have found your spot.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ratchet wrench with various sized sockets
  • Pliers or wrench
  • Level
  • Hoist or other way of placing the carriage on the rails

Step1
Decide where you wish to place your mill. You should choose a place that is as level as possible.
Step2
Connect the rail sections together using the provided bolts and nuts. Position the completed rails into place. Check for level.
Step3
Dig out any high places along the rail set-up. A sawmill will operate at its peak on level ground.
Step4
Use the hoist to set the carriage on the rails. Move the carriage from the front to the back several times to make sure that the rails are not moving or swaying. If they are, either remove more dirt or add more to take away the movement.

Tips & Warnings

  • If desired, you can pour a concrete pad to set up your mill. Concrete pads are much easier to level.
  • Three or four strong men can replace the hoist; so recruit friends and neighbors if needed. Expect them to want to play with the mill when it’s ready to run.
  • An mill that is not leveled properly will not cut straight boards.
  • Never allow children to play around a sawmill. The blades are sharp and can easily inflict serious wounds.
  • Always practice safety when operating your mill. Keep clear of the blade and wear safety glasses at all times.
