Going green for the Thanksgiving holiday can lighten your load, especially if you have volunteered to be the host this year. Being less wasteful will help you have a hassle-free holiday, and you will still be able to create an elegant and simple atmosphere for friends and family.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Purchase the essential items that you will need to cook for Thanksgiving dinner. Make a list before going to the grocery store so you don’t go overboard.

  2. Step 2

Try shopping at stores that sell organic and locally grown crops. Don’t waste gas by driving out of the way to specialty stores. Try to find everything at one or two locations.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the meal so that it appears as though there is more food than there really is. Dinner guests will expect tons of food, so make it look like there is a lot by portioning some of the food items. For example, instead of baking cakes or pies, make a tart or smaller dessert for each individual.

  4. Step 4

Use cloth napkins and real silverware instead of disposable utensils and napkins. This will reduce the amount of waste going to landfills.

  5. Step 5

Set leftovers aside and put them in a bin to be composted.

  6. Step 6

Give extra food to the needy by sending it to a food bank. Or have your guests make donations to an organization like Second Harvest.

  7. Step 7

Put leftovers that guests will be taking home in a reusable container or bag. Biodegradable bags will work too.

  8. Step 8

Set the mood for a comfortable, relaxing dinner by lighting candles for the meal instead of using electricity. Purchase soy candles, which burn cooler and longer than other candles containing paraffin and petroleum.

Tips & Warnings
  • When planning for the dinner, try to think of other ways you can be less wasteful without compromising your guests’ expectations.
