Losing a father can be a very traumatic experience, especially for a young man. A male of any age has a different relationship with his father than he does with anybody else. Here are some tips on how you can help your friend when he has lost his father.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Tell your friend how sorry you are for his loss. That’s the first thing you can do after he has lost his father.
Step2
Be there to talk with your friend. Your friend may want to talk about memories of his father or just talk about anything else. It’s important to spend time with your friend after he has lost his father.
Step3
Do something special with your friend to commemorate the life of his father. This could be anything from going to a sporting event to just having a beer. Let your friend decide on the activity.
Step4
Eventually return to a normal relationship with your friend. You don’t want every conversation or activity to bring up your friend’s father. As time progresses you’ll want to try to bring some normalcy to your friend’s life and to your relationship with your friend.
Step5
When the time is right, do something with your friend that he would normally do with his father. If your friend and his father went to a football game once a year, for example, you could offer to do the same. Obviously, you can never replace your friend’s father. You can help him to move on, though.
