Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Start at home. Treat your spouse, children, partner, or whoever you live with, with respect and love.
Step2
Extend this to your workplace. We don't generally choose the people we work with. They often come from many walks of life, religious and ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientations. Learn to walk a bit in their shoes and see things from their perspective. Don't make assumptions.
Step3
More about the workplace. Hold a diversity day. This can mean anything from holding diversity workshops to sharing food from different heritages. Share something about your own background that people might not know and find interesting. I used to bring a menorah to work on Chanukkah because I worked evenings. Education is where understanding begins.
Step4
Feeding the hungry at a homeless shelter
Extend this to your community by helping people who are less fortunate then you are. Volunteer at a local shelter, food bank, or other place of your choice. Living in a world where differences are embraced instead of ignored or shoved aside and teaching these lessons to your children are among the messages that King wanted to spread to others.
