How to Look Like a Parisian

Americans in Paris stick out like sore thumbs. If you want to avoid the barrage of oh-so-French sneers headed your way, follow some simple steps that are essential to any urbane traveler to a more urbane land. With a few changes to your look, you’ll be strutting in Parisian fashion in no time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Take a look around. Parisian women dress meticulously and very self-reflexively. Accent pieces to basic Parisian clothing are particularly tasteful. A simple silk scarf tied around the neck spices up a chic, neutral-toned overcoat. In place of an elaborate ’do, try tucking hair into a tight, sophisticated chignon (a bun formed at the nape of the neck). Rather than clunky sneakers, opt for sensible and stylish leather city shoes. Pop into a high-end Parisian department store for ideas.
Step2
Notice the amount skin showing (or not showing). Leave the mini-skirt and short shorts at home. Not only do they make you conspicuous as a tourist, but render a lone, female traveler vulnerable to men that prey on tourists. Instead wear conservative clothing that flatters a woman as it is well-tailored and not simply tight.
Step3
Dress using the principle of simplicity. Flashy baubles, more often than not detract from an outfit. Darker colors are also preferred by many Parisians.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid American surfer stereotypes by leaving home bright gaudy-colored clothing and avoid pulling back long straggly hair into a ponytail. It's shorts and flip-flops that loudly scream “I’m American.”
  • Don’t smile too much and don’t take offense if Parisians refuse to smile at you. It is not a sign of rudeness; Parisians simply don’t register emotion as patently as Americans do.
  • Check the volume of your voice. Americans frequently draw attention to themselves in public places in Paris due to the loudness of their conversation and laughter.

on 8/6/2008 When I married a Frenchman I lost most of my clothes LOL

Blue, white, pink, black, beige are your colors. Limit the prints. No logos!

No tennis shoes and t shirts unless you're running! Collared shirts/dresses. Straight skirts, always dress up. I've gotten used to it...people ofen accuse me of overdressing simply because i wear skirts and chunky heels. Why be frumpy? Life's too short.

on 3/4/2008 All great advice. Another tip--Parisien women wear a lot of classy black or dark colored outfits.
