Unable to make rent? Unexpected circumstances such as getting laid off or medical expenses can force anyone into this situation. Use these tips to approach your landlord, and increase your chances of getting an extension.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact your landlord as soon as you realize you won't be able to make the month's rent. The more notice you give him, the better prepared he'll be to handle the temporary loss of income.

  2. Step 2

Explain your present circumstances, including the reason why you're unable to pay. Be honest and forthcoming. Most landlords are willing to work with a tenant rather than begin eviction proceedings. Give him every reason to.

  3. Step 3

Clearly lay out the steps you intend to take to make up the money owed. Ask to be put on a payment plan. His response will be based on your previous payment history.

  4. Step 4

If he refuses to set up a payment plan, ask the landlord's permission to have someone move in to share expenses. Roommates should be chosen carefully. Each roommate is responsible for all of the rent, unless the written lease says otherwise. If a roommate does not pay their portion, or moves out, your landlord can make you pay all of it.
