Fried cheese curds are often considered a staple of the typical Wisconsin diet, but it's easy to make your very own batch at home! Cheese curds are the fresh curds of cheddar, and are best enjoyed within 24 hours of production. Here's how to make fried cheese curds in a few simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 lbs. of fresh cheese curds, straight from the factory
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cups of oil
  • Frying pan
  • Medium bowl for mixing
  1. Step 1

Pour oil into frying pan and set on stove. Prepare the oil for frying by increasing the temperature to the highest setting and then letting it simmer at medium heat while you prepare the batter.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the batter. Sift the flour, baking powder, and salt into a medium bowl.

  3. Step 3

Beat the eggs and combine with milk. Stir into flour mixture and mix vigorously until smooth.

  4. Step 4

Dip each cheese curd into the batter and fry in hot pan. Cook approximately 1-2 minutes on each side until the curds turn light brown in color.

  5. Step 5

    Drain on paper towels.

  6. Step 6

Serve with ketchup, ranch dressing, hot sauce, pickle, mustard, or just on its own!

Tips & Warnings
  • Cheese curds melt during frying leaving you with a gooey (and addictive) snack wrapped in batter.
  • Fried cheese curds need to be eaten immediately.
  • Use vegetable oil for the best results.
  • Use a deep fryer if you want to control the temperature with ease.
  • Use enough batter before frying or the curds will start to melt in the pan.
