People often take for granted how many times a day they are required to grip an object firmly—grasping pens to write with, mail to open, forks to eat with and switches to control the lights. Different factors, including muscle and joint diseases, influence a person’s ability to grip an object. For anyone who struggles gripping everyday items, find a few strategies and ideas to change these to fit your needs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Foam
  • Rubber bands
Step1
Wrap foam around handles of knives, forks and spoons, pen and pencil grips; doorknobs; and other smaller objects to thicken the section a person holds or turns. You can also place rubber bands around handles, bottles, cans and lids to create a firmer grip to keep your hands from slipping.
Step2
Choose cups that are lightweight and have textured surfaces to make lifting and holding the cup easier.
Step3
Try an electric toothbrush. These typically have thicker handles than standard toothbrushes, along with the added benefit of allowing a person to brush his teeth with less effort. Alternatively, use foam around regular toothbrush handles.
Step4
Use non-slip placemats, bowls and plates to keep them from sliding while you are trying to eat.
Step5
Look for items available in stores, like reachers and jar openers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take note of what activities cause you the most trouble and decide what strategies or items might help most.
  • Meet with an occupational therapist to discuss what you can do to help stay as independent as you can.
