Step 1
Create a name. The obvious choices for business may not be available. For me, http://www.kristenfischer.com was my first choice, but I was lucky to get it. I may have had to gone to something like "kristenfischercopywriting" or "kristenwrites." Come up with a few picks so you're not upset should your top choice not pan out.
-
Step 2
Enlist your identity. Act now--domain availability is ever-changing. To ensure you get your top pick, pick it up! Time is of the essence--many people purchase domain names to hold the identity long before their websites are even complete.
-
Step 3
Register. There are plenty of places that enable you to easily register the name you select. Choose from Network Solutions, Yahoo and Go Daddy to name a few (see Resources below). I use Aplus for all my website hosting and domain needs and I am satisfied with the service there.

Step 4
Stay updated. Once you have your domain, don't let it go. Make sure you keep on top of the domain's renewal date. Most companies will give you a warning if you're in danger of losing your domain (when your contract is up). Businesses have, in the past, let their domain's expire--and there goes all the money with it when they need to buy all new marketing materials and have lost their online presence. Don't let it happen to you.

Step 5
Market it. When you finally have your domain set and your website is up and running, include it on everything--email signatures, brochures, press releases, business cards, and more. You'll find a return on your investment when you notice your page hits rising!
