Ask them to stop whining. Often children slip into this tone of voice without even realizing they're there. Ask them to stop whining and see if they listen and change their tone.

    • 2

Praise them for using their normal voice. If they've just stopped whining or you notice they are currently using their normal voice, thank them for using a normal tone. This will cement what a normal tone sounds like to the child as well as making them feel good about using this voice.

Look them in the eye. Children whine for myriad reasons, but sometimes it's because they need their parents' focus. Kneel down, speak in a low tone and look your child in the eye. This will stop the whining in its tracks.

Stay calm. Explain that whining is unacceptable. It's difficult to avoid getting frustrated and angry, but remember that you're trying to rid your child of this annoying habit.
