It's what we all want to avoid...the enormous blowout diaper that requires significant clean up. But what's the best way to avoid it? Diaper specifications are a good start, but read on for some other road-tested suggestions.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remember that specifications are a guideline. Your child's build best determines what size diaper he should wear. If you're having regular blowouts, go up a size.

  2. Step 2

Look for any gapping at the leg. As children being moving more actively, their leg muscles develop and their chubby little legs thin out. Check if any gaps are present. If so, either change to a smaller size or consider a diaper that is designed for activity and has a double row of elastic at the leg such as Pampers Cruisers.

  3. Step 3

Notice if the diaper is falling off while walking. This could be a sign that the diaper is the wrong size. It could also be a sign that the waist design for the diaper you're using may not be effective anymore. Check for diapers that provide a velcro adjustment or use a velcro cover for cloth diapers.

  4. Step 4

Note if the diaper is too tight at the waist. Children naturally have pot bellies, but if the diaper causes red markings on your baby's belly, find a different style to allow more comfortable movement. Velcro adjustable waists on disposable diapers are best as are velcro covers for cloth diapers.
