Things You'll Need:
- Christmas tree
- Axe
- Wood chipper
-
Step 1
Buy a tree with roots. Many Christmas tree farms now sell trees with roots. As long as you water and care for the tree while it's in your home, you can replant it after the holiday season.
-
Step 2
Replant the tree. If you purchased a tree with roots, replant it in your backyard or a friend's backyard. This gives it a chance for a new life.
-
Step 3
Use it for a wildlife sanctuary. If your tree doesn't have roots (or it died during the holiday season), consider putting it in your backyard anyway. It can be used as a home for wildlife like squirrels and birds.
-
Step 4
Chop it up. If you have a wood stove or wood burning fireplace, chop up the tree for use as firewood. If you don't have a wood stove, check with your friends and neighbors. One of them might want the tree for wood.
-
Step 5
Chip it. A chipped tree can be used for mulch around your shrubberies, trees and plants. You may be able to rent a wood chipper from a large equipment rental facility.
-
Step 6
Find a local program. Some local communities have Christmas tree recycling programs that will pick up your tree and recycle it into something useful.
