American Sign Language or ASL is the primary way in which our deaf community communicates. Learning the alphabet will allow you the ability of rudimentary communication by finger spelling when necessary.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Time
  • Dedication
  • An image of the alphabet signs or a teacher

Step1
The ASL Alphabet Find a poster or online file with the ASL alphabet, or find a teacher who knows ASL.
Step2
Practice each sign in order until you feel that you have them down fairly well.
Step3
Use whatever memory methods you prefer, like flash cards or associations to remember the signs out of order as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice often to retain your skills.
  • Build your skills by learning new signs or to sign your name.
  • Don't expect great communication with a deaf person. If all you know is the alphabet, your conversation will be very slow and tedious for both of you.
