Participating in an individual defensive player fantasy football league is a great way to follow the football season as it progresses. Each week, you will want to evaluate what players you have available to start for your team, and choose the ones that will likely score the most points. Prior to drafting your team, you will want to research how certain players performed in previous seasons, and based on the scoring system of your league draft accordingly.

Things You'll Need:

  • IDP fantasy football team
  1. Step 1

Determine which defensive players on your team are among the league's best at their position. Usually, those top players will be the most consistent at their position.

  2. Step 2

Familiarize yourself with the scoring system for your league. If your league places an emphasis on sacks, then utilize an individual defensive player that is capable of scoring a lot of sacks. The same goes for tackles and interceptions.

  3. Step 3

Research the matchups that each individual defensive player on your roster has. You will want to start a linebacker that's facing a team that runs the ball a lot, a defensive back against a team that throws a lot of interceptions and a defensive lineman against a team that allows a lot of sacks. Knowing which players have the most favorable matchups will allow you to set the best possible roster each week.

  4. Step 4

Scout what players are available to be picked up as free agents. Oftentimes another team will drop a player because they don't have room on the roster for him. If he has a favorable matchup that week, or you need depth at the position, don't hesitate to pick him up.

  5. Step 5

Keep track of the bye weeks for the players on your team. You don't want to get zero points for a player because they were on a bye week. Picking up players via free agency or trades can help you avoid scoring no points during the bye weeks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Research your individual defensive players' matchups every week. Sometimes the fantasy team with the most talented players doesn't win, but the one with the best matchups does.
  • Keep track of any bye weeks, injuries or suspensions. You always want to try to avoid scoring zero points in any given week.
