How to Install RAM Memory Sticks in a Desktop PC

RAM, or random-access memory, is probably the easiest hardware upgrade you can perform on your desktop PC, and possibly the most effective, as well. You shouldn't have to hire a technician to perform this simple task; just follow a few simple steps after purchasing the correct RAM sticks for your machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the case sides, or if your computer lays flat, remove the cover and set it aside. Place all the screws in a small bowl for safekeeping while you access the inside of the machine. Some cases come off without screws.

    • 2

Observe the fan-CPU assembly that is plugged into the motherboard. Note this is not the large fan that cools the power supply, from which the AC power cord runs. Near the fan-CPU assembly, observe the RAM installed in slots in the motherboard. Sometimes there are two, three or four slots. Depending on your system, some slots may be empty.

    • 3

Push gently outwards on the pair of clips holding the RAM sticks in place until you feel them unclip. The RAM stick is loosened. Gently pull the loosened RAM stick up and out. Take care to hold it only by its edges.

    • 4

Make sure your RAM is correct for the computer you are putting it into. Gently slide the new RAM stick into place with the tabs in the right place. All RAM types have tabs, or slots that allow the user to place it into the slot in the correct orientation.

    • 5

Gently push down on the end of the stick until the clip clicks into place. Never force the stick down; it should slide gently but firmly into place.

Tips & Warnings

  • RAM should always be used in size order. Do not mix sizes when replacing the RAM, since this will make your computer not function properly.
