These steps will guide you through a hard reset of your satellite receiver after a temporary signal outage.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the power. Make sure the receiver is plugged in properly and that the power indicator light is on.

  2. Step 2

Check that your television is on the proper channel (usually channel 3 or channel 4).

  3. Step 3

Check the connections on the back of your receiver to ensure they are secure. If they are loose then tighten them (righty tighty, lefty loosey).

  4. Step 4

Manually turn off your receiver at the box (do not use the remote). Wait 30 seconds and turn power back on. If the picture is back then you are done. If you still have no picture then procede to the next step.

  5. Step 5

Look to see if your receiver has a card slot. If it does, check for a key card. If there is a key card then slowly remove it, wait 30 seconds and then re-insert the card. Do not force the card into the slot as this could damage it. This step will generally apply to older model satellite receivers only. Turn on the power and check for a picture. If you have no picture then procede to the next step.

  6. Step 6

Unplug the receiver from the power source. Wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. Again, check for a picture. If you still have no picture then you will need to contact your service provider to set up a time for a technician to come check things out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Weather could be the cause of your signal loss. If you are experiencing a hard downpour you need to wait till the rain passes. Many times this alone will correct the problem.
  • Take a quick look at your dish and see if there is anything obstructing the signal (snow, limbs, etc). Trimming limbs in the springs will sometimes solve your problem.
  • Strong winds (60mph +)can occassionally knock your dish out of alignment. You will need a technician to fix this problem.
  • Never move your satellite dish. Even a small movement can cause a loss of signal
  • Never check electrical equipment during an electrical storm.
  • If you feel the least bit unsure of any of these steps please call a technician. Many satellite packages include in-home service plans (check your contract).
