Unless you have those versions of Vista that include DVD playback codecs you are forced to purchase third party dvd software from vendors such as Cyberlink or Intervideo.
Not all are compatable with Vista.
There is a free codec package that enables dvd playback in XP and Vista.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • DVD drive
  1. Step 1

    Download:

    Standard version/Full Version:

    http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm

  2. Step 2

Install Codecs- be sure to remove check from setting classic media player as default player.

  3. Step 3

All the defaults should work fine, but if you want to tweak feel free.
    DVD playback is now functional.
