Shabbat Candles
Shabbat Candles

Lighting the candles for Shabbat is one of the few Mitzvot that only a woman can perform. It is by lighting the candles that the woman of the house signifies that her household is ready for Shabbat and invites the Sabbath in.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prepare at least two candlesticks and set them in a place where they will be visible but not in the way. The candles should be kosher wax and can be purchased at most of the larger supermarket chains or through a local specialty store.

  2. Step 2

At sunset --or when the first three stars appear-- use a scarf, napkin, or any other handy item to cover your head, then light the candles.

  3. Step 3

Cup your hands and make sweeping, circular motions with them, reaching out three times around the outside of the candles, then pulling your hands back together toward your chest. Imagine that you are scooping up the light and bringing it into your soul.

  4. Step 4

Cover your eyes and recite the following blessing:
"Blessed are You oh Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by His commandments and has commanded us to light the candles of Shabbat."

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that the Shabbat candles should burn until they go out by themselves - they should never be blown out.
  • Be careful to keep all cloth well out of the flames, especially if wearing a trailing scarf or long sleeves.
