Protecting the environment starts at home. Here's are things that you can do to raise environmentally aware kids.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Recyclables
  • Art supplies
  • Computer

Step1
Involve your kids in the recycling. Even very young kids can learn to separate the paper, glass and plastics. Explain why you take the time to recycle, then follow up with a trip to the recycling center.
Step2
Reuse materials in art projects. Make fun time learning time by reusing egg cartons, toilet paper tubes and other household items in art projects. Explain why it's important to keep items out of the landfill.
Step3
Teach your kids to appreciate the outdoors. Go on walks, hikes, camping trips and other outdoor outings as a family. Explain that this is what you're working hard to protect when you recycle, reuse items and do other environmentally friendly things.
Step4
Volunteer your family for outdoor clean up projects. Explain that this is a simple way that you can help to protect the environment.
Step5
Help your children calculate their carbon footprint. Use a carbon footprint calculator (there are plenty available online) to calculate each child's impact on the earth. Show them how changing certain habits--walking instead of driving, turning off lights, etc.--can lessen their impact.

Tips & Warnings

  • Earth Day events are a fun way to introduce kids to the concept of protecting the environment.
  • Check out books about recycling and the environment at the library.
