How to Enjoy a Tire Swing

One of the most enjoyable activities of childhood is swinging on a tire swing in your own backyard. It's low-tech, low-cost fun. Do you want to make a tire swing of your own? Just follow these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick out a tire for your swing. You could either use a car or truck tire or a tire for a tractor. You can find these tires at junkyards or even tire stores.

    • 2

Drill holes in the bottom of the tire so that it won't fill with rain water.

    • 3

Find the perfect tree from which to hang your tire swing. An oak, walnut, maple or ash would be best as these are hardwood trees with deep roots. Look for a branch that is straight and not forming a "V." If that branch is at least 12 feet off the ground, you'll swing farther.

    • 4

Use playground chain to hang the tire. You can find this at a hardware store. The chain should be at least 3/16 inches thick. If you have to use rope, but make sure you use Dacron rope or nylon, as they weather well.

    • 5

Drill a 12-inch hole through the branch, then insert a 12-inch eyebolt through it, and secure it in place with 2 nuts and a washer.

    • 6

Drill a 12-inch hole in the top of the tire, and insert a washer and a 12-inch eyebolt, then secure the eyebolt with 2 nuts, a fender washer and another nut.

    • 7

Spread mulch or bark beneath tire so that the roots of the tree are protected.

    • 8

Get swinging on your tire and have fun!
