How to Compare Sales Tax by State
If you are a new resident in a state, one of the first things you should do is check the sales tax of your state. Sales tax differs from state to state. Some states have a sales tax over 7 percent, while other states have no sales tax at all. By following these steps, you can compare sales tax by state.

1
Determine which states you want to compare. If you are moving to a new state, it's best to look up both the state you are leaving and the state you are moving to.
-
2
Surf over to the Tax Admin site where you can find a table which lists the sales tax rate in each state. Once you are on the homepage of the site, click on the "Compare By State" link on the top of the website. On the subsequent page, click on the "Sales Tax By State" link in the middle of the page. The following page shows a chart listing information about sales tax on each state.

Understand the sales tax chart. The Tax Rate column is the sales tax percentage for that state. If you see an asterisk under Food, Prescription Drugs or Non-Prescription Drugs, that means that the state has exempted those items from being taxed. If you are moving to a new state, compare your new state to your old state to figure out if you are going to spend more or less money on sales taxes.

4
Check with your local government concerning additional sales taxes that may be added to the state mandatory sales tax. For example, in Texas, cities can add up to 2 percent in sales taxes at their discretion.
