How to Make Chocolate Matzo Torte for Passover

Making a good dessert during Passover can be a challenge because leavened flour is forbidden to observant Jews during this time. A chocolate matzo torte is a rich, delicious alternative because there are no prohibitions against chocolate, sugar and eggs. It is a traditional seder dessert and there is no need to separate eggs. The following steps will show how to make a kosher chocolate matzo torte for Passover.

Things You'll Need

  • 8 Matzo balls
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6 oz. chocolate chips
  • 3 tbsp. Potato or corn starch
  • 2 tbsp. Margarine
  • 1 cup and 2 tbsp Water
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla
  • 1/8 tsp. Salt
  • Chopped nuts
  • Sweet red wine

Instructions

    • 1

Bring a cup of water to a boil and add in the salt, sugar and starch. Stir constantly until the mixture comes to a boil again and cook for 1 minute.

    • 2

Remove this mixture from the heat and stir in the chocolate chips until the mixture is smooth. Stir in the margarine and vanilla. A package of vanilla sugar may be substituted for the vanilla. If you do this, add the vanilla sugar along with the regular sugar, which should be reduced by an equal amount.

    • 3

Dip a matzo ball in the wine on both sides and set it on the serving dish. Spread the filling on the matzo ball while it is still warm, covering it completely.

    • 4

Repeat Step 3 for all of the matzo balls and sprinkle them with the nuts. Chill until cold and serve.

    • 5

Use the filling to make a jelly roll as an alternative.
