Moss grows in damp shady locations, and a shady patio is an ideal environment. Removing moss from a patio is time-consuming and requires removal to be done on a regular basis throughout the growing season. Keeping moss from returning to a patio after it has been removed is impossible, but the patio can be kept looking tidy with regular removal.

Things You’ll Need:

Garden hose
Push broom
10 gallon bucket
Detergent

Step1

Start removing the moss from the patio by first washing down the area with a garden hose. Aim the full force of the spray at the root structure. The blasts of water can rip loose quite a bit of the moss.

Step2

Mix 1 cup of powdered detergent with 10 gallons of warm water. Wash down the patio with the detergent mix.

Step3

Scrub the patio surface with a stiff bristled push broom. Use the force of the sweeping action to tear out the clusters of moss. Sweep the moss into a pile and dispose of properly.

Step4

Apply a mild moss killing agent for stubborn clumps of moss. There are numerous chemical sprays that can be used against moss, but select the mildest one to reduce contaminating the environment.

Step5

Perform regular washing of the patio with mild cleansers to keep the patio moss free throughout the year.
