How to Remove Moss From Brick

Moss stained bricks adds a rustic feel to a brick home, but the moss can also damage the bricks, sills and doorways. Moss has fine, shallow roots that hold moisture and promote rot. The porous surface of bricks provides a natural growth media for moss, and as such it can be difficult to remove moss completely from bricks.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bucket
  • Garden hose
  • Bleach
  • Detergent
  • Scrub brush

Step1
Start the moss removal process by washing the bricks with a garden hose. Use the stream of water to tear loose clumps of moss from the bricks.
Step2
Mix a cup of bleach and a cup of detergent in a 10-gallon bucket. Wear old clothes, rubber gloves and protective eyewear whenever working with strong bleach. Thoroughly wash down the bricks. Let the mixture soak into the moss clusters.
Step3
Take a strong scrub brush and scour the bricks. This will take a lot of elbow grease. Be sure to scrub the mortar.
Step4
Rinse the brick surface again. Take a pocket knife or other implement and remove the most stubborn masses of moss. Do not dig into the surface too deeply and damage the brick.
Step5
Use a moss killing agent only as a last resort. There are several good quality moss killers on the market, but start with the mildest and resist the temptation to go for overkill on a persistent moss problem.
