Fresh herbs are a great addition to any cooking venture, and what better way to keep your kitchen supplied with them than to plant an herb garden on your patio. Planting an herb garden on your patio isn't only a practical use of space, but it also adds greenery to your patio. Use these simple steps to make planting your patio herb garden a breeze.

From Quick Guide: Patio Design
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Herb seeds
  • Containers
  • Small rocks or gravel
  • Composted potting mix
  • Sand
  1. Step 1

Choose herbs to plant in your patio herb garden. A good way to start is to take a look at your kitchen shelves and determine what herbs you use the most. Or simply plant oregano, thyme, rosemary, basil, dill, chives, parsley and sage for a good variety. These are the most popular herbs and are easy for even a first time gardener to grow.

  2. Step 2

Choose a sampling of many different sizes and shapes of containers to give your patio herb garden a fun and unique look. Make sure that your containers have holes in the bottom, then fill the bottoms with small rocks or gravel.

  3. Step 3

Fill your containers with composted soil mixed in a 2 to 1 ratio with sand, leaving a 1-inch space on the top. Water the container and allow it to drain before planting your herbs.

  4. Step 4

Plant your herbs in the containers. Keep oregano, rosemary, mint and thyme in separate containers, as they tend to grow large or spread a lot and take over the container. You can grow the other herbs together in large shallow pots in your herb garden.

  5. Step 5

Place containers on your patio in a location where they should get at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight and can be enjoyed by you and your guests.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can make holes in metal containers using a hammer and nail.
  • Place sweet-smelling herbs such as lavender near the seating areas on your patio to get a natural potpourri.
