For many, prom is an opportunity for high schoolers to come out to a social event as adults. While dancing is part of any successful prom night, it's important for people to dance politely so that other prom go-ers feel confident and respected while on the dance floor. Follow these steps to dance politely at the prom.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Be confident. One of the best ways to be a polite dancer is to be confident before and while you dance. Being confident will allow you to approach your prospective dance partner with respect and communicate with other dancers in a polite, but not embarrassing, way. So, start off with confidence in your decision to be a polite dancer.
Step2
Ask someone to dance. Before you grab a girl or guy on the dance floor you should ask that person if they want to dance. Even if you don't intend to dance freaky with a person, it's polite to approach a person, introduce yourself and ask that person if they'd like to dance with you.
Step3
Keep your distance and watch body language. To be a polite dancer at the prom you should start dancing with a respectful but not excessive distance between you and your partner. Watch your partner's body language and make eye contact to see if your partner wants to move closer. Also, keep in mind that if you want to keep or close distance during a dance just let your partner know so he or she can dance in a way you're comfortable with.
Step4
Continue to be polite after the dance. Even if you were the most considerate prom dancer ever while you were dancing, you still need to be polite after the dance if you truly want to be polite. After the song is finished, look at your dance partner, thank them for the dance and tell them you enjoyed it. If you want to go the extra mile towards politeness ask if you can get your dance partner a drink.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be generous about responding to invitations to dance. The person probably had to work up his or her courage to ask you, especially if it means cutting in on your date. Spare the person one dance, or be gracious in declining.
