Step 1
Survey your environment. Take a look around the places you spend most time and make a quick note of things that you use and throw away that either don't need to be used or thrown away. Everything from paper plates to lights left on contribute to unnecessary waste. So, take a survey of your environment to see where you can make the fastest steps to better conservation practices.

Step 2
Save water. Water is one of the most valuable resources on earth. It is also one of the resources that is easiest to save and conserve on a regular basis. Practice water conservation by turning off the tap while you brush your teeth or while you soap in the shower. Take the practice one step further by saving run off from your sink or rain to water flower and plants at home. One general method for saving water is giving yourself a daily allowance for home use and sticking to that amount.

Step 3
Recycle whatever you can. Recycling is one of the best methods of conservation there is. You can begin by participating in your city or town's recycling programs which probably accept plastics, glass and paper. However, take this principle one step further by making new things out of old material. For instance instead of throwing away old shoes, make them gardening or work shoes, and instead of trashing clothes use them to make rags or even as material for new designs.

Step 4
Keep your appliances clean. While cleaning things like air ducts, plumbing pipes and heating units is quite difficult, the amount of energy and money you'll save in the long run from this kind of basic maintenance is enormous. Pay particular attention to radiators, which often run inefficiently, and air conditioning units that often only need a new air filter for the machine to use less energy for a given amount of output.
