The prom is typically the first time in a boy's life he needs to wear a tuxedo. Getting one can be a little bit intimidating, but compared to finding the perfect prom dress, tux rental is a piece of cake.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to a local tuxedo shop. Bring your date or buddies along so you can get their opinion. Register with the store.

  2. Step 2

Find a tux that best suits your personality. You can get a two-button, three-button or four-button tux, in white or black. The collars differ, too. There are notch, cut-away, diamond or peak collars.

  3. Step 3

Pick out your vest style and color. You may want to get it to match your date's dress or choose classics like silver.

  4. Step 4

Decide between a bow tie and traditional tie. Rental shops offer both varieties. The rental will automatically come with shoes.

  5. Step 5

Get fitted. The salesperson will measure your neck, sleeve, pant waist, pant out seam, hip, chest and over arm. They'll also ask for your shoe size, height and weight.

  6. Step 6

Try on a sample tuxedo jacket and pants. Starting there, you'll try them on until you find the right fit.

  7. Step 7

Place your order with the salesperson. Tell him the date of your event. You'll need to pick up the tuxedo at least one day in advance, so you can be assured it fits.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can go over the top with tails or a top hat, too.
  • Place your order as soon as possible, at least two weeks in advance. Don't wait until the last minute.
  • If you're getting fitted for a wedding tux, the groom should do so three to five months before the wedding. Out-of-town groomsmen should submit their measurements four to six weeks beforehand.
