A-line skirts are designed to flatter any figure, that is, if you know how to choose the right fit. A-line skirts are the similar in shape to the letter A, narrow at the top and gradually becoming wider toward the bottom of the skirt. The right A-line skirt is a versatile addition to any wardrobe.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fit your waist properly. Make sure the A-line skirt you buy fits your waist properly; it shouldn't be too tight or too loose. Too tight in the waist and it will only accentuate problem areas like your lower stomach or hips. If the skirt is too loose, your body shape will become lost, defeating the whole purpose of the skirt.

  2. Step 2

Pick the right length for you body. Length is always important when choosing any skirt. Buy an A-line skirt that hits at, or just below, the knees for the most flattering length for all body types.

  3. Step 3

Pay attention to the cut of the A-line. The best A-line skirt is one that gradually widens from top to bottom. A-line skirts with extreme widening will result in a sloppy look.

  4. Step 4

Identify the right print for your body type. Smaller, petite women should stick with an A-line skirt that has a small and simple print. Tall, thin women can wear just about any pattern and look good, and taller, larger women should be wary of prints and go with solid colors.

Tips & Warnings
  • Forget size and focus on fit. Sizes vary so much from designer to designer. You could be a Size 6 in one brand and a Size 8 in another. So buy your A-line skirt based on how it fits you in the waist and not the size on the tag.
  • Avoid elastic banded A-line skirts. Elastic bands have a tendency to bunch up and don't hold the A-line cut of the skirt at all. Stick to structured A-line skirts with buttons, clasps or a zipper to ensure the most flattering look.
