Feminism is an important theme for many individuals (especially women). Learning the various forms of feminism and the injustices that women across the world have to face is something anyone interested in changing the world should take an active interest in advocating. Follow some steps to help you understand feminist beliefs and begin to open not only your mind but also hopefully the minds of society as a whole.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Analyze your beliefs about women, gender roles and society's treatment of women across history. Write down your views about things like marriage, child rearing, women and careers, rape, abortion and any other politically relevant topic you can think of.

  2. Step 2

Research the various forms of feminism there are many but a few major ones are crucial to understanding feminist ideology; radical feminism, conservative feminism, ecofeminism, individualist feminism, black feminism and post feminism to name a few. See if any of your personal views fall into any of these particular ideologies.

  3. Step 3

Find a course at a university or college that gives a brief history of feminism throughout history and the treatment of women cross-culturally. Take note of the mistreatment of women across the world and the rise of feminism in different cultures in the past century.

  4. Step 4

Become familiar with the various arguments against feminist theory. Pick a subject and write an essay about your topic using a feminist theoretical model to frame your argument; do as much research as possible to support your argument.

  5. Step 5

Look for pertinent examples of a women related problem in everyday life or media and identify the feminist perspective answer for the cause of that problem. Become an advocate for women's issues and try to understand the basics of feminism through practice the theories.

Tips & Warnings
  • Join a feminist support group in your city or visit a student group on a campus to interact with women's advocates.
  • Search for a comprehensive list of feminist authors and read the work of feminist theorist throughout history.
  • Do not refer to a feminist as a "femi-nazi" or stereotype all feminist as "man-hating;" these stereotypes are incorrect and unfair to the feminist movement.
