How to Ask a Nerd to Prom

So you've decided you'd like to ask your resident nerd to the prom...easier said than done. Nerds, sometimes socially lacking, can be frightened off if they don't know you or trust you. However, there are some things you can do to get on their good side and on your arm at prom.

1. Plan your strategy. Nerds are generally either easy to land a date with or extremely difficult, depending on their personalities. Before you terrify a nerd by recognizing that he exists, devise a plan with which you're going to ask him to the prom. If you just come out and ask, he might be scared and turn you down out of fear.

2. Get the nerd talking. Strike up conversations between classes or volunteer to be her partner on a project. Often this helps to build a rapport because she's forced to talk to you--and it could ensure a good grade on the project.

3. Avoid letting the nerd know your intentions. The goal is to make him comfortable enough around you so you can ask him to the prom. Talk about things that interest him, even if it seems inane to you. Remember, before you ask him, you must be on his good side so he isn't scared off. Dropping hints merely confuses him and makes him anxious.

4. Be direct when you finally ask a nerd to prom. Once you've found your moment, don't beat around the bush. The last thing you want is to drive her away with a wordy introduction that may scare her. After all, you're involving her in a scary, social situation that with complex high school rituals. Simply ask her, "Would you like to go to prom with me?"
