Substitute teachers are in great demand. Whether it's a one day job or an extended period at the same school, you should dress appropriately for class. Of course, your attire will vary according to circumstances.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Dress professionally for your first meeting with the principal. Present a polished, well-groomed look. Dark slacks or skirt, collared shirt and jacket will make a solid impression.

  2. Step 2

Wear a style of dress that is appropriate for the school. Your style of dress should fit in with the other teachers. Some schools are more formal than others. When you go to visit the principal, pay attention to what the regular teachers are wearing.

  3. Step 3

Present an appearance of authority when you substitute for the older grades in school. Dark slacks or skirt and neutral colored shirts make for a polished look of authority.

  4. Step 4

Take your dress style down to a more casual level if you're substituting in the younger grades, especially at kindergarten level. Comfortable, loose-fitting slacks or jeans are appropriate here. You must be dressed in a way that allows you to get down on the floor, bend and move around to keep up with the youngsters.

  5. Step 5

Teach in clean, neat jeans or sweats and tennis shoes when you substitute for the Physical Education teacher. This is definitely a gig for comfort.
