Become a Tree Surgeon

If you're a nature lover who is interested in trees and plant life, consider a career as a tree surgeon. A tree surgeon is involved in all aspects of tree care, including trimming, planting, pruning and treating diseases. Unlike logging or other tree removal occupations, tree surgeons are interested in the protection and care of trees.

Instructions

    • 1

Enjoy working outdoors. Be physically fit enough to climb trees and work with hand and power tools, such as chainsaws, at various heights.

    • 2

Take college courses in forestry, agriculture and aboriculture. Though there are no formal educational requirements to become a tree surgeon, you should study the characteristics of all types of trees.

    • 3

Gain experience with the tools of the trade and get used to working outdoors by working as a landscaper or volunteering to do outdoor work for community services.

    • 4

Apprentice with a tree surgeon for hands-on training. If you don't have a formal education, hands-on training is the best way to become a tree surgeon.

    • 5

Join the local chapter of an association, such as the International Society of Aboriculture, for networking. Continue your education and earn certification as a "Skilled Tree Worker." Earn other special certifications, such as for working around power lines.

    • 6

Adopt a conservation mentality. Tree surgeons are more interested in saving trees, or cutting down only those that have been damaged by disease or weather. Work to preserve trees whenever possible.
