How to Polish Handbells
Handbells are beautiful instruments that are usually made from brass. These instruments can be expensive and should be cared for properly. This includes polishing and cleaning the handbells.

1
Collect as many old rags and towels as possible, especially if you have a few different octaves. Use old rags and towels because you will toss them after you are done polishing.
-
2
Buy a handbell polish, such as Peek. This polish can be purchased where the bells were purchased, or you might find brass polish at the hardware store.
-
-
3
Dip the rag into the polish. Make sure you get enough polish to cover the entire brass part of the bell.
-
4
Rub the polish evenly on the bell. Do not put on too much polish, just enough to lightly cover the entire brass part. Let the polish dry completely.
-
5
Use a clean, dry rag to rub the polish off when it is dry. Use a dry, clean towel or rag with each bell. Using a different towel or rag will prevent old polish from rubbing off onto another handbell.
-
6
Put the bells back into their cases once you have removed the polish.

Tips & Warnings
Polish handbells every 6 months or so to keep them shiny and clean.
Remove all polish from all of the bell. Leaving polish on the brass part of the bell may distort the sound.

You never want to use just rags. You want to use a soft cloth and don't by polish from the hardware store. It can leave scratches. It is not necessary to polish bells every 6 months if they are given a light wipe down every other week or so.
