Keeping garlic fresh is a simple process. Find a suitable container and store in a place that will help keep your garlic as fresh as when you purchased it from the grocery store. Extend the freshness of your garlic cloves by following these tips.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose fresh garlic at the grocery store. Buying fresh garlic will ensure that your garlic's shelf life will be lengthened at home.

  2. Step 2

Get a garlic keeper. Garlic keepers are available for purchase at many grocery stores for less than $5. If you would rather not buy a garlic keeper, use a brown paper bag.

  3. Step 3

Find a cool, dry and dark place to store your garlic. These types of places keep moisture away from the garlic and deter the bulbs from sprouting and growing bitter. Look for areas that are at stable temperatures with humidity levels of 70 percent and have a good degree of air circulation.

  4. Step 4

Put the garlic into the garlic keeper or brown paper bag. Close tightly to ensure that the garlic is protected from excess light and moisture.

  5. Step 5

Store the garlic in your chosen cool, dry dark place. If you invest in a garlic keeper, you may be able to keep your garlic on top of your kitchen counter for easy access. The best time to keep garlic on kitchen counters is during cold, winter months.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider storing your garlic in cellars or cupboards that are rarely opened or exposed to light.
  • Avoid storing garlic in the refrigerator.
