  1. Step 1

    Choose fresh eggs at the grocery store. Make picking up a carton of eggs your last stop during your trip to the grocery store. When checking out, ask the cashier to pack the eggs with any frozen items you have chosen or request that the eggs be wrapped in special refrigerating bags.

  2. Step 2

    Check your refrigerator's temperature. Eggs need to be stored at 40 degrees F or 4 degrees C or lower to retain freshness.

  3. Step 3

    Make room in your refrigerator for the carton of eggs. Clean off the middle of the refrigerator rack so that you will have space for the carton of eggs. Put cooked foods on a separate shelf.

  4. Step 4

    Ensure that the eggs in the carton do not have any cracked shells. Check the carton for any breaks, too. Whole cartons help protect eggs from absorbing unwanted smells or tastes from surrounding food. Consider replacing the carton if big cracks or tears are present.

  5. Step 5

    Place the carton in the middle of a refrigerator rack as far away from cooked foods as possible. Proximity to cooked foods may speed up spoilage. Putting the carton in the middle of a rack ensures that the eggs will remain a uniform temperature.

  6. Step 6

    Eat the eggs before their expiration date. Expiration dates are carefully calculated using the date of laying, transit times and the expected time that the eggs will remain on the grocery shelf.
