Step1
Read out loud to your child everyday. Read children's books, the comics section of the newspaper, or describe picture books to your child.

Read something everyday in front of your child. It can be as simple as a recipe or an Internet how-to article. Read the newspaper, magazines and books that you enjoy. Read regularly. You need to become a role model. Stock your home with collections of varied reading materials.
Step3
Visit your local library. Find a good book and read it to your child while you are still in the library. Let your child pick out library books of interest and check them out. Obtain a library card for yourself and for your child. Bring home good books to read.
Step4
Collect age appropriate reading material for the children in your home. Children need childrens books around the house. Younger elementary age children enjoy chapter books. Children need to own their own books.
Step5
Talk with your children about what you are reading. Children love to listen to stories with rich language. Use descriptive words to describe characters and sequences of events. This will serve to improve everyone's vocabulary in the environment. Involve children in conversations and discussions. Ask their opinions about what they read.
Step6
Learn to love and value reading. Children will demonstrate a love for and a value of the reading culture in their environment. Children will copy their caregivers.
