How to Transform a Closet into a Laundry Nook

In the long list of possible home renovations, transforming a closet into a laundry nook is one of the easiest and most reversible changes you can make, and while it sounds like a trifling change, it can actually enhance the room. Laundry safely housed in a "laundry nook" is laundry not sitting in piles on the floor. Laundry nooks in an average home fill the same role as the "laundry chutes" in mansions or condominiums, getting dirty laundry into an out of the way place.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get everything out of the closet to prepare it for "renovation." Any bars or shelves that will be in the way have to be removed. On the other hand, if a shelf is not in the way, it might be a good accessory.

  2. Step 2

Measure the closet footage. You'll want to find a bin or other laundry container roughly the same size as the closet, but with some "wiggle room;" a too-large container might look okay, but it will cause headaches when it's time to access the laundry.

  3. Step 3

Install your "laundry bin" so that any laundry put into the closet will fall directly into place, in a plastic or cloth container where it can be easily taken out to clean.

  4. Step 4

Make sure your bin and other infrastructure doesn't impede opening the door, and that anyone taking the laundry out has easy access to the container. Create handles that can be easily reached, so that it's not too difficult to drag or lift the laundry bin out of the closet.

  5. Step 5

Add accessories. Air fresheners or patterned wallpaper are two options to brighten the space. Make your laundry corner a stylish part of the room.
