How to Support Leukemia Research

Leukemia includes four types of cancers of the blood. The two most common types in adults are acute myelogenous leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Each type has a different treatment protocol and a different prognosis. Leukemia affects people of all age groups. Although survival rates have improved in recent years over 22,000 people in the United States die each year from leukemia. Research is needed to find a cure.

  1. Step 1

    Donate money to the American Cancer Society. They use funds donated for research, education and services for people with cancers such as leukemia. The American Cancer Society has offices throughout the United States. Some offices also accept donations of used cars. Contact an office in your area for more information. Keep in mind all donations are tax deductible.

  2. Step 2

    Volunteer with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in your area. This national organization has offices in various cities throughout the United States. They need volunteers to organize special event, solicit donations and do clerical work. A volunteer coordinator at an office in your area will be able to match your expertise with their needs.

  3. Step 3

    Walk to raise money for leukemia research. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society holds a fundraiser in various cities across America called Light the Night Walk. All ages are welcome to participate. Walkers solicit donations from individuals or find a corporate sponsor. The money collected is used to fund leukemia research.

  4. Step 4

    Write letters to editors at your local newspapers explaining the need for government funding for leukemia research. Include statistical information and a personal story if you have one.

  5. Step 5

    Learn where political candidates stand on government funding for leukemia research. Support candidates for public office who will advocate for government funding for research. Work on a candidate's campaign to help him or her get elected.

  6. Step 6

    Consider becoming a bone marrow donor. Although it is not for research purposes it can save the life of a person with leukemia until there is a cure.
