Before submitting anything for publication most editors require a "query letter" in advance. This is basically a simple letter that gives the editor the basics of what your submission is about.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Contact info of editor
  • Something to submit
  1. Step 1

After you've finished your poem, novel, short story, etc. begin the query letter by first adding your personal information at the top of a blank piece of paper. This should include your name, address, email address and phone number. If you have a web site, that too should be added here.

  2. Step 2

Next, start on the body of the query. Make certain you use the editor's name. This will show them you've read enough to know to whom you are actually submitting. Using, "Yo, editor" won't work.

  3. Step 3

In the actual body of the query keep it simple. Write the basics of what the story is about. It's also a good idea to tell them if your submission has been published anywhere before and why you think it would be a good fit for their publication. Also make sure to give the word count of your submission.

  4. Step 4

End your query by giving the editor a little background info. Let them know what publications (if any) you've been published. Thank them for their time and mention you hope to hear back from them soon.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't get fancy. Use a basic font (Times Roman or Courier New works) with a font no larger than 10 or 12 point.
  • Your query letter should be no longer than one page.
  • Don't boast! Telling the editor you're "the best of the best" will get you laughed at and your submission thrown in the trash.
  • No fancy colors in your query or submission.
