Summer's here and you're looking forward to earning some money to help pay for that car you have your eye on or to supplement your wardrobe for school in the fall. You've babysat for your parent's friends before but now you'd like some regular babysitting jobs. If you're motivated enough to do a little footwork, it won't be long until you have a list of parents that want to hire you.

1. Prepare before school is out for the summer. You want to have a number of jobs lined up so you don't have any down time when summer starts. Planning ahead will help you beat the competition from other kids looking for summer babysitting jobs.

2. Find out if your local YMCA, or recreation commission, offers any babysitting courses. Certified babysitters are highly sought after for their knowledge of first aid and childcare. Many communities provide babysitting courses free of charge.

3. Create fliers advertising your availability to babysit. Make sure you list your preference for babies or older children. More jobs open up for babysitting with children 6 to 9 years of age during the summer months because they, too, are out of school.

4. Mention if you are free for overnight or weekend babysitting to accommodate parents who want to get away for a day or two. Being flexible in your schedule will bring more babysitting summer jobs your way.

5. Consult prospective employers about driving arrangements. If you have a license and your own car, they may be comfortable with you transporting their children to swimming lessons and other activities. The ability to transport the kids makes you more desirable as a sitter.
