How to Use Citrus Fruit Peels in the Home and Garden

Citrus fruit peels are commonly used for cooking or aromatic potpourri; however, most often they are simply thrown into the garbage bin. Citrus fruit peels have a number of great uses in the home and garden, and should not be wasted. The next time you decide to enjoy a delicious orange or healthy grapefruit, think twice before tossing the peel.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Place the peels of orange, grapefruit or lemon on a sheet of aluminum foil in a sunny location for one week to dry them thoroughly. Cut them into smaller pieces and add them to your potpourri for a light and summery air freshener. You can also place dried peels in small cheesecloth bags and place them in drawers, cupboards and closets.

  2. Step 2

    Poke two holes on opposite sides of a half rind of an orange or grapefruit. Tie a string to each hole. Fill the half rind with suet birdseed and hang the citrus fruit bird feeder from a tree in your garden.

  3. Step 3

    Clean with lemon peels, as lemon is a natural degreaser and disinfectant. The next time your have a blackened pot, fill it with water and a few lemon peels and bring the water to a boil. Boil for 5 to 10 minutes and wash as normal. You can also clean and disinfect a cutting board by rubbing the peel into the surface.

  4. Step 4

    Prevent cats from using your beautiful garden as a litter box, by placing citrus fruit peels around your garden plants.

    Use citrus peels as beauty aids. Grind a small amount of citrus fruit peel and add enough water to make a paste. Apply the paste to acne, and leave for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. You can also easily clean underneath your fingernails by pressing them firmly into the inside of a citrus fruit peel.

  6. Step 6

    Throw a few citrus fruit peels into your fireplace. The next time you decide to enjoy a cozy fire, you can also enjoy the spicy citrus smell.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you are done using your citrus fruit peels, instead of throwing them in the bin, place them in your garbage disposal to keep it clean and smelling fresh.
