Open doors to a new career

If you're interested in a job that combines real estate knowledge with management skills, then becoming a property manager could be the career for you. Property managers can work for property management firms or manage any type of property, from office complexes to apartment buildings, from condos to community associations. Being a property manager is a responsible but rewarding career.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a bachelor's or master's degree in business administration, real estate or finance from an accredited college or university. A degree can help when applying for an assistant property manager or similar entry-level position.

    • 2

Take property management courses. There are several courses available, online or classroom, that teach the essentials of property management.

    • 3

Gain experience in the real estate field. Spend time as a broker or real estate agent. A background in showing and selling real estate is a great asset in becoming a property manager.

    • 4

Pass a state property management licensing examination, if this is required by the state where you live. Registration and test fees apply.

    • 5

Become a Certified Property Manager through the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM).

    • 6

Join a professional property management association such as the National Association of Residential Property Managers (NARPM) or Property Management Association. Take advantage of seminars, conferences and continuing education opportunities.

I was a Resident Property Manager. I only left my job because of the location. I don't have any degrees. I only had office, customer service, and management skills. I hoping to get back into Property Management again, but not live their this time.
