The huge SXSW (South By Southwest) Music Conference takes place every March in Austin, Texas. Attendees know all the clubs that feature SXSW bands by heart-Emos, Stubbs BBQ and others-but the hub of the action, the Convention Center, features concerts at the Day Stage Café. Usually open at eleven in the morning, it's perfect for early risers who want to glimpse acts before going to seminars.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • SXSW music pass

Step1
Drop by after picking up your complimentary SXSW swag. The Day Stage and its adjoining Café, situated on the second floor of the Convention Center, offers food, drink and a subdued atmosphere for viewing bands. Buy a snack or breakfast and commandeer a table or one of the chairs in front of the stage.
Step2
Listen to bands before they play clubs. Most bands that play the Day Stage also perform in clubs later in the week during South by Southwest. Since Day Stage shows have a more laid back style, and since the shows take place earlier in the day, you don't have to worry about getting in before the venue fills to capacity.
Step3
Stop and talk with band members afterward. Since it's still daytime and there aren't a lot of distractions and alcohol like at a SXSW night show, you'll get to spend a few minutes speaking with performers when they're in a calm mood.
Step4
Get a press pass so you can take photos of the bands. You'll have to secure a pass well in advance, but it's worth the time and effort. Taking pictures at the Day Stage doesn't involve the hassles you encounter at a night show.
Step5
Pick up extra publicity materials outside the Day Stage Cafe. Read over swag or promo cards left on the tables by volunteers and band members.
