Mountain biking is a physically demanding sport. It is great for keeping in shape and getting into the great outdoors. Starting this sport may seem difficult at first. Learning basic skills, in small segments, may be the way to approach learning mountain biking.

    Think safety first. Mountain biking is a sport that can be dangerous. Safety needs to be your first concern. Buy a good helmet and wear it correctly.

    Research the different types of mountain bikes before you purchase. This may be a big task. There are many out there. Each type has its own pros and cons. Know what you are looking for before you go out to purchase your bike.

  3. Step 3

    Find a reliable source of information on mountain biking. This could be someone that you know that has been mountain biking for a while. It may be a local club with others.

  4. Step 4

    Learn basic skills on your mountain bike. This includes pedaling, stopping and shifting gears. Each bike is different, but these skills are essentially the same.

  5. Step 5

    Practice your skills. Practicing on flat land before headed out on the trails will give you the feel for both your bike and the skills. As your skills increase, start practicing on beginner trails.

  • Wear gloves when biking. As a beginner, you will have spills from your bike. Gloves will protect your hands. It is also easier to grip the handlebars with gloved hands. Buy the best gloves that you can afford.
  • Ride in control at all times. This includes maintaining a safe speed, knowing the trail and not attempting skills beyond your skill level. Keep safety in mind at all times.
  • Consider renting a bike to try out before buying. If you have never been mountain biking before, this will give you a chance to try it. It will also allow you to try different types of bikes before buying.
